The purpose of the sound here is to build tension up to the moment they see the dinosaur, this is because they audience can see by the music that something is going to happen. This also used to fill gaps in the visuals such as in the helicopter scene as when they were traveling it builds the narrative although this needs to be filled will the music in order to keep the audience interested. By using this music it can also create a brand for the film, this means not is recognisable to the audience.
The music is used throughout this but only creates an impact in the moments when there is tension. such as when the helicopter begins to shake the music switches to a slower, more tense sound as this leads the audience to believe something bad may happen for this. The music gradually gets slower and deeper throughout this as it builds to a climax, this means the audience will become gradually more tense therefore increasing the impact of the visuals. Sounds of the helicopter are also used to make it seem more believable, this is important as with films like Jurassic park they need the audience to believe the storyline and pot in order for them to be immersed in the film.
Wallace & Gromit
The purpose of this music is to build suspense and tension, when he is being controlled up the wall the music gets louder and more dramatic, this is building suspense for when we see the bird controlling him, this is important as it grabs the audiences attention so they will understand the story. Another time when suspense is built is when he tries to reach the diamond, the music starts low and high pitched but soon becomes loud to build tension. When the diamond is dropped high pitched loud music is used to get the audiences attention and make them jump, this is because it is a critical moment in the scene although when the diamond is caught the music stops.
The music supports the visuals as it allows the audience to understand important areas of the film and build the narrative even more. By using music which starts slow and gradually builds up it allows the audience to know when something important is going to happen which then matches the visuals.
Alton Towers advert
This advert is used to advertise the Alton Towers theme park, they use sounds/music in this to give the illusion they are on a rollarcoaster, by doing this is lets the audience know what the radio advert is about, seen as there are no visuals to support it, and to keep the audience interested. By using screaming it also links to the audience getting a thrill out of going there which may attract the audience further. The sounds of screaming and roller coasters impacts the audience as they it may make them want to go to there and so they know what the advert is about.
That Was Then Radio Drama
This radio drama uses sounds to describe the narrative as it cannot be seen, this makes sounds a very important tool. In the beginning it uses sounds such as phone call tones and broken speech to show they were on the phone, this uses so much sound as the audience cannot see her on the phone and so it needs to be made more obvious. As this is a thriller genre it uses harsh sounds and cuts this is to build suspense for the audience and make them jump, this would fit with genre conventions of this drama. This impacts the audience more as they will be waiting for something to happen which keeps them interested and entertained throughout. Most of this is recorded from the main character 'Anna' who is recording this, this is made obvious to the audience as there is a radio static in the background only present when she is speaking. Sounds of Keys are used in one of the clips, this is because they need the audience to see they are doing something such as opening a door or looking for something, they use background noise such a traffic, people talking, keys rattling to fill the space in-between dialogue as the audience cannot see what is going on so they have to show them through sound.
Saving Private Ryan
The sounds in Saving Private Ryan start off quite and timid, this matches the visuals as there is shots of the calm ocean on a beach. There begin to get more frequent and loud sounds as the narrative gets more intense, as the war begins there is gun fire, explosions, water splashes, this builds a intense mood as the audience can see the chaos going on as people are being shot. There is again another contrast as the it goes silent, this is as he is observing all the chaos going on around him, people blowing up, fire, people loosing limbs, this again builds an intense mood as the audience can fully focus on what is going on. The sound helps the film fit with genre characteristics as the audience would expect to see/hear war sounds in this type of film. This scene is intended to make the audience understand what went on in the war and to maybe make them feel empathetic to the people going through that, by using loud/harsh sounds it allows the audience to be immersed in the film and feel like they are there with them. The sounds impact the audience as it makes the scene more dramatic, this is important as they want to connect with he film and feel as though they were involved in it.
Blue planet
In this clip from Blue Planet it shows a fish catching birds who are on the surface of the water, this starts with calm music and little sound as there are shots of both the fish and the birds. when the fish goes to attack the music builds up to create tension, this matches the visuals as the fish is slowly getting closer as it builds up. As this is a documentary it uses factual sound such as the bird sounds, this is important as it sets the seen and matches visuals so the audience know what they are watching. a lot of this is also filmed in slow motion with slow sounds, this is it adds tension. Documentaries add tension to entertain the audience. The sound throughout creates tension so the audience is impacted by this and makes them want to watch more. The sound matches with pace of the visuals, this is important as when the sound and visuals are slow it builds up tension as this is a classic convention used to build up the tension and so the audience expect something to happen when the music speeds up, in blue planet the music speeds up when the fish caches the birds.
Radio 4 'fruit'
For radio sound is important as it has to be believable that everything that happens did happen. With this clip it uses mainly actual sound of laughter from a studio setting, this is kept in to make it more interesting. A pre-rec is used as part of his show to tell a joke, this was used as he needed other people to be used in it as part of the joke, you can tell this is a pre-rec because of door creaks and change of sounds. A bed is also used when he was telling a story, this was used to further entertain the audience and make it seem more dramatic, this impacts the audience as it makes the story more engaging and makes them what to listen. This also impacts the audience as it is clear when the story begins and ends, this is important as in order to understand the joke he is telling the audience would need to know the timeframe. He uses pre-rec content to add context into his jokes to make them better.
